Laura Theeuwen

I grew up watching light behave strangely — the way late afternoon sun turns an ordinary kitchen into something almost ceremonial, the way shadows arrive before the thing that casts them. That early fascination never left me. It became the engine of my work.

My paintings live somewhere between the clearly real and the quietly impossible. A woman stands at a window and the view behind her does not match the season outside. A bowl of fruit levitates, barely, just enough to ask you whether you saw it. I want the viewer to stop and wonder whether they imagined it — that pause is where the painting does its work.

I work primarily in oil on linen. Slow medium, slow thinking. Each painting takes weeks of underpainting and revision before I consider it finished — if it ever is. I am based in Belgium, and I show my work both locally and internationally.
