Laura Theeuwen

I am a painter, born into a wooded corner of the world near Leuven (Belgium) — a place of quiet light and slow, patient growth that has never quite left me. It lingers somewhere beneath everything I make.

Every painting begins long before the brush touches canvas. I research, I wander, I sit with a subject until it begins to speak — and slowly, an image forms in my mind, not all at once, but piece by piece, like fragments finding their way home to one another. Only when that inner image feels whole do I begin to paint it, sometimes guided by reference photographs of my own making, small anchors to help me stay true to what I saw in my mind's eye.

I am drawn, as a sensitive soul, to the harder truths — injustice, the fractures in the world around us — yet I paint them not to dwell in darkness, but to search for the light hiding within. I go looking for beauty in the same spirit: not in the clean, cold lines of the modern and new, but in things worn, weathered, and half-forgotten, which so often hold more soul than anything freshly made.

What emerges is usually something imaginative, almost magical — a door left slightly ajar into a world where that particular kind of wonder, so easily lost in ordinary life, is allowed to live again.
